Despite Known Health Risks Long-Term Use Of Anti-Anxiety Drugs Continues In B.C.

Drugs to treat anxiety and sleep disorders are still being prescribed for extended periods to British Columbian patients – and i ncreasingly so for baby boomers – despite warnings against long-term use, according to a University of British Columbia study. A rapid CZE method for the analysis of benzodiazepines in spiked beverages

A rapid CZE method was developed for the simultaneous determination of nine benzodiazepines in spiked beverages (nitrazepam oxazepam, alprazolam, flunitrazepam, temazepam, diazepam, 7-aminoflunitrazepam, 7-aminonitrazepam and 7-aminoclonazepam). The method employed a double-coated capillary coated with poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) and then dextran sulphate. The cannabinoid CB1 receptor is involved in the anxiolytic, sedative and amnesic actions of benzodiazepines

Previous studies in our laboratory sho wed that cannabinoid CB1 receptor knockout mice (CB1-/-) presented increased anxiety-like behaviours that did not respond to the anxiolytic actions of benzodiazepines. These results suggest that the pharmacological effects of benzodiazepines may involve the participation of cannabinoid CB1 receptors. A 63-year-old woman, who had been treated with 20 mg of paroxetine and 0.5 mg of alprazolam daily for 1 year and with 50 mg of metoprolol daily for 15 days, presen ted to a facility elsewhere with presyncope and complete atrioventricular block. Three days after her initial p resentation and cessation of metoprolol treatment, she was transferred to our clinic to be considered for permanent pacemaker implantation. (more…)

Combined effects of alprazolam (Alp), a member of benzodiazepine group of drugs and caffeine on human cell lines, HeLa and THP1 were investigated in this stu dy. Alp mediated cytotoxicity was enhanced while caffeine was present. The cell death was confirmed by observing morphological changes, LDH assay and membrane anisotropic study.
