The study data consisted of minute-by-minute glucose signals collected from nine deidentified patients over a five-day period using continuous glucose monitoring devices. AR models were developed using single and pairwise combinations of frequency bands of the glucose signal and compared with a reference model including all bands. Diabetes was induced by a single injection of streptozotocin (48 mg/kg iv), and the ACh-induced relaxation of rat carotid arteries was examined 6 wk later. A diabetes-induced increase in superoxide levels, determined by L-012-induced chemiluminescence, from carotid arteries was associated with endothelial nitric oxide (NO) synthase (eNOS) uncoupling and increased catalytic subunit of NADPH oxidase expression. The sensitivity and maximum response to ACh were similar in normal and diabetic rats despite a decrease in NO release detected by 4-amino-5-methylamino-2',7'-difluorofluorescein.
Cardiac complications and heart failure are the leading cause of death in type 2 diabetic patients. Mitochondrial dysfunction is central in the pathogenesis of the type 2 diabetic heart. However, it is unclear whether this dysfunction is specific for a particular subcellular region. The purpose of this study was to determine whether mitochondrial dysfunction in the type 2 diabetic heart is specific to a spatially distinct subset of mitochondria. We investigated mitochondrial morphology, function, and proteomic composition of subsarcolemmal mitochondria (SSM) and interfibrillar mitochondria (IFM) in 18-wk-old db/db mice. Oxidative damage was assessed in subpopulations through the measurement of lipid peroxidation byproducts and nitrotyrosine residues. Proteomic profiles and posttranslationa...

We performed a 6-year antibiotic susceptibility records review from January 2003 to December 2008 to assess the prevalence of MDR isolates by pathogen at the US Army Institute of Surgical Research Burn Center. During the study period Acinetobacter baumannii (780 isolates [22%]) was the most prevalent organism recovered, followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (703 isolates [20%]), Klebsiella pneumoniae (695 isolates [20%]), and Staphylococcus aureus (469 isolates [13%]). MDR prevalence rates among these isolates were A. baumannii 53%, methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) 34%, K. pneumoniae 17% and P. aeruginosa 15%. Two isolates, 1 A. bauma...

All lung cancer patients living in the area (103) and 247 matched controls were genotyped for the GST mu 1 (GSTM1) null, GST theta 1 (GSTT1) null, and GST pi 1 (GSTP1) Isoleucine (Ile) 105 valine (Val) polymorphisms and interviewed to gather information on smoking and dietary habits. Neither the presence of GST polymorphisms nor their interaction with smoking was independently associated to lung cancer risk. The intake of carotenoid-rich red and yellow vegetables was inversely ass…

Cytotoxic and cytostatic properties of flavonoids were investigated in vitro by flow cytometry and were compared to known anticancer drugs (cisplatin, doxorubicin, etoposide). It was confirmed that doxorubicin induced growth arrest and protected A549 cells from taxol while simultaneously killing or blocking H1299 and FaDu cancer cells. Drs Tariq and Mitchell state that some literature on Stratus OCT report retinal thinning in diabetics with minimal or no diabetic retinopathy (DR)—in contrast to our article, which reported no thinning compared with controls. Drs Tariq and Mitchell also ask whether such discrepancy between studies may be accounted for by correcting for the effects of race, age, and sex on retinal thickness (as we did in our study). This is an excellent point and, in our opinion, a very important consideration when designing or interpreting studies with OCT-based outcomes.
