Caffeine augments Alprazolam induced cytotoxicity in human cell lines.

Combined effects of alprazolam (Alp), a member of benzodiazepine group of drugs and caffeine on human cell lines, HeLa and THP1 were investigated in this stu dy. Alp mediated cytotoxicity was enhanced while caffeine was present. The cell death was confirmed by observing morphological changes, LDH assay and membrane anisotropic study. AbstractThe respiratory eff ects of benzodiazepines have been controversial. This investigation aimed to study the effe cts of oral alprazolam on ventilation. In a randomised, double-blind cross-over protocol, 20 healthy men ingested 1 mg of alprazolam or placebo in random order, 1 week apart. (Nasdaq: ALXA) announced that it has completed the enrollment in its Phase 2a proof-of-concept clinical trial with AZ-002 (Staccato(R) alprazolam) in patients with panic disorder. In a 30 year old woman, already taking an SSRI and quetiapine, is there any evidence that cyclical use of alprazolam reduces severity of symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder. If so do the benefits on average outweight potential harms?

Unfortunately, we cannot answer this question as we found no guidelines or studies examining the cyclical use of alprazolam to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder in patients concurrently taking quetiapine and a SSRI. Anxiolytic therapy with alprazolam increases muscle sympathetic activity in patients with panic disorders.

This study demonstrates (1) that anxiolytic therapy with alprazolam increases muscle sympathetic nerve activity and heart rate not o nly in patients with panic disorder but also in healthy controls and (2) that a significant difference in sympathetic nervous system activity between patients and controls, at baseline and during the therapy with alprazolam could not be demonstrated.

Alprazolam is successful in reducing anxiety but has a high addictive/misuse potential. Topiramate is a novel anticonvulsant which has be en used as a mood stabilizer. Other anticonvulsants, such as carbamazepine and valproate, have been used in alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal. Topiramate has recently been used in alcohol, cocaine and opiates withdrawal.
