Drugs to treat anxiety and sleep disorders are still being prescribed for extended periods to British Columbian patients – and i ncreasingly so for baby boomers – despite warnings against long-term use, according to a University of British Columbia study. Long-term, high-dose benzodiazepine prescriptions in veteran patients with PTSD: Influence of preexisting alcoholism and drug-abuse diagnoses

Databases from the New England Veterans Integrated Service Network were analyzed to determine factors associated with long-term, high-dose anxiolytic benzodiazepine p rescriptions dispensed to patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and existing alcoholism and/or drug abuse diagnoses. Among 2,183 PTSD patie nts, 234 received the highest 10% average daily doses for alprazolam, clonazepam, diazepam, or lorazepam, doses above those typically (more…)

The New Term “Pharm Party” Refers to a Party Where Prescription Drugs Are Readily Available in a Potentially Deadly Mixture

Today, when young people talk about a “Pharm Party,” they are not necessarily referring to a keg party in someone’s barn out on the family farm. The term “Pharm” is short for pharmaceuticals, which includes such drugs as Xanax, a strong tranquilizer and powerful pain killers like Vicodin and Ox ycontin.
